Irish Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Murder in Hungary

An Irish national has been handed a 14-year prison term in Hungary for the murder of an American tourist in the capital city in 2024.

The victim, identified as Mackenzie Michalski, a 31-year-old individual from Portland, Oregon, went missing while on a holiday in Hungary and was last seen at a nightclub in Budapest on November 5, 2024.

Following a missing person report, authorities reviewed security footage from local nightclubs, revealing Ms. Michalski, also known as “Kenzie,” with a man, later identified as the perpetrator, at several establishments on the night she disappeared.

The suspect, known by the initials LTM and aged 37 at the time, was apprehended on November 7, where he confessed to the crime after being interrogated by the police.

Investigations indicated that Ms. Michalski and the accused initially met at a nightclub, proceeded to the man’s rented apartment, and engaged in a physical altercation that led to her death.

The Budapest Metropolitan Court convicted the man of murder and sentenced him to 14 years in prison with no chance of parole, with credit for the 18 months already spent in custody, and ordered his expulsion from Hungary upon completion of his sentence.

Additionally, the man was instructed to pay court costs amounting to 2.5 million forints (£6,000), and his legal representative has filed an appeal against the ruling.

Despite initially claiming the victim’s death was accidental, evidence suggested that the perpetrator tried to conceal the crime by cleaning the crime scene, concealing the body in a wardrobe, and later disposing of it in a wooded area near Lake Balaton, about 90 miles southwest of Budapest.

Law enforcement disclosed that the man had conducted internet searches on body disposal methods, police procedures for missing persons, animal scavenging habits, and local wildlife before his apprehension.

Furthermore, he had made inquiries about the efficiency of Budapest’s police force through online searches.
