An inquiry has been initiated following a video that captured a Royal Mail employee unleashing a profanity-laced outburst at a young woman. Jennifer Rain, aged 22, expressed feeling “terrified” when the worker verbally attacked her on an Edinburgh bus on June 30. The incident occurred after a Lothian Buses driver kindly allowed Jennifer, a chef residing in the city, to board for free at Haymarket upon realizing she had misplaced her disabled bus pass.
Upon boarding the bus, the man at the front began shouting derogatory remarks at Jennifer, causing her distress. Concerned about the situation escalating, Jennifer started recording the interaction on her phone. The video shows the man repeatedly swearing at her and demanding that she cease filming. He criticized her for not paying for the bus fare and accused her of taking advantage of the situation.
Despite Jennifer’s attempts to explain her situation, the man continued berating her, causing her to feel frightened and vulnerable. Jennifer, who has a two-year-old child, expressed relief that her child was not present to witness the altercation. She emphasized the seriousness of the incident, highlighting the inappropriateness of someone in a public-facing role behaving threateningly towards a person with a disability.
The confrontation, witnessed by only a few passengers, went unchallenged until another woman later reported the incident online. Both Police Scotland and Royal Mail are conducting investigations into the matter. A Royal Mail spokesperson condemned the behavior in the video, stating that it does not meet the company’s standards and reassuring support for the police investigation. Police Scotland confirmed receiving a report of the incident and is currently investigating the details.
The incident has sparked concerns about the treatment of individuals with disabilities and the conduct of service providers towards the public. The need for a thorough investigation and appropriate action to prevent such incidents from reoccurring has been underscored by the seriousness of the situation.
