A school in New York was cleared out following an incident where bricks and support columns from a neighboring 37-story building toppled onto the street. The structural integrity of the tower block in Manhattan was compromised as two support beams on the 21st and 22nd floors gave way during the morning rush hour, with floors showing signs of sagging between the 21st and 26th levels.
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) responded to reports of falling debris on 235 East 42nd Street around 8 am EDT (1 pm BST), leading to street closures for both pedestrians and vehicles. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the evacuation of a school housing approximately 400 students. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and all occupants of the building were safely evacuated.
Mayor Mamdani disclosed that engineers are actively addressing the compromised floors, utilizing drones for building inspections instead of risking human safety. He emphasized the ongoing instability of the structure and expressed gratitude for the swift response of emergency personnel and the composed reaction of New Yorkers.
Efforts to stabilize the building will commence once it is deemed secure, according to Mamdani. Fire Department Chief John Esposito cautioned that the building remained in a precarious state, with continuous movement observed by officials on-site. A “collapse zone” has been established as a precaution, and a restricted area spanning from 40th to 45th streets, between 1st and 3rd avenues, has been put in place. The timeline for reopening the area and allowing evacuees to return home remains uncertain.
Developer Metro Loft assured cooperation with the Department of Buildings to fully comprehend the situation, emphasizing the priority placed on the safety of workers and the public. The building, previously Pfizer’s global headquarters, is undergoing a transformation from offices to high-end apartments. Situated near the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, and the United Nations headquarters, the location holds significance in the heart of the city.
