A man is in critical condition at a hospital after a robot vacuum cleaner malfunctioned and caused an explosion, leading to a house fire that resulted in severe burns covering 75 percent of his body.
Lachie Perrem, a 25-year-old resident of Perth, Australia, was severely injured in the fire that destroyed his home in Brabham on July 2. Emergency responders were summoned to the scene following reports of a fire, and Lachie was swiftly transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth for treatment.
Currently, Lachie is undergoing multiple surgeries and remains sedated in the burns unit as medical professionals strive to save his life. His family and friends are grappling with the aftermath of the tragic incident, with his fiancée Bri Thompson expressing the surreal and overwhelming nature of the situation.
Fiona, Lachie’s mother, who resides in a different part of the country, is arranging to travel to Western Australia to be with her son during his recovery process. She conveyed the family’s distress over the life-altering event and the desire to support Lachie through his healing journey.
The fire’s intensity was captured in video footage from the scene, revealing the extensive damage to the kitchen and lounge areas of the house. Authorities are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the fire, focusing on a robotic vacuum cleaner suspected to have triggered the explosion.
An online fundraising campaign has been initiated to aid Lachie’s recovery efforts, with nearly £11,400 raised thus far. Additionally, the robotic device involved in the incident has been sent for further examination by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation, and Safety.
