An Airbnb host accused of using the property for raunchy gatherings has failed in a legal dispute to maintain a sauna and decking that neighbors believed were utilized for questionable activities.
Owen Chandler Harrod promoted his bungalow in Ormesby St Margaret, Norfolk, as a romantic retreat for couples with a hot tub. However, locals alleged that the hot tub became a setting for outdoor intimacy due to the elevated decking, providing unwanted visibility to the community.
Harrod, previously denied retroactive planning approval, faced complaints from neighbors about alleged debauchery at his residence. He recently lost an appeal following objections from neighbors, some of whom claimed various inappropriate activities occurred there.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council rejected Harrod’s request for the decking, sauna structure, and tall fencing. Despite his appeal, the Planning Inspectorate upheld the decision after a site visit where access to the property was not granted. Locals expressed concerns about witnessing explicit behavior from the property’s raised decking.
Residents reported finding discarded items like condoms in their yards and enduring disruptive noise from the bungalow. One local, Rosemary Vincent, 90, mentioned knowledge of various inappropriate activities, while John Huxford, 80, observed questionable behavior on the premises.
The inspector warned Harrod about potential dismissal if he failed to attend a visit, leading to the rejection of his appeal under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
Despite the controversy, the bungalow is still listed on Airbnb as a luxurious coastal retreat with upscale amenities. Harrod, who purchased the property during the pandemic, may be compelled to remove the sauna and dismantle the decking and fencing.
In response, Harrod claimed unawareness of any issues with the Airbnb listing, noting its success and positive interactions with neighbors. He expressed willingness to engage in discussions with concerned neighbors.
