Flames have broken out in close proximity to the primary airport in Majorca, with residents hearing loud explosions and witnessing smoke rising above the runway.
Palma de Mallorca Airport has been placed on “pre-alert” due to the nearby fire, potentially causing disruptions to flights to and from the popular holiday destination favored by British tourists.
Pictures depict thick black smoke ascending over the airport, visible from miles away, prompting residents in the smoke’s path to stay indoors for safety.
National Police and the Palma Fire Brigade have responded to the scene, actively working to combat the flames. Two firefighters have received treatment for smoke inhalation, as the fire has extended to parked vehicles, proving difficult to extinguish due to the abundance of fuel at the location.
The fire is believed to have originated within the Mercapalma main food storage facility before spreading to the parked vehicles, which have also ignited, complicating firefighting efforts, as reported by the local news outlet.
According to Flightradar, 257 flights are currently delayed at Palma de Mallorca Airport, although there have been no official announcements regarding the fire on the airport’s website or social media platforms.
A spokesperson from Aena, the company managing Palma de Mallorca Airport, informed the Mirror that the fire has not impacted airport operations at present.
