“Study Reveals Most Overcrowded Tourist Destinations Globally”

Vacations provide an opportunity to explore different cultures, visit iconic landmarks, and savor new cuisines. However, the experience can be dampened when numerous other tourists are present at the same destination.

Following a period of restricted travel due to the pandemic, there has been a surge in global tourism, leading to overcrowding at popular spots. Edinburgh Castle in the UK was identified as the most overcrowded landmark worldwide, as per a 2023 study by MoneyTransfers.com highlighting the most congested tourist destinations globally.

The research pinpointed Phuket in Thailand as the most densely populated tourist destination globally, with an astonishing ratio of 118 tourists to each local resident.

Renowned for its pristine beaches, Phuket boasts some of the finest coastal locations in the world, including Kata and Karon beaches, attracting a high volume of visitors.

Due to its allure and fame, Phuket’s beaches may become overcrowded, especially during peak seasons. Thailand’s Pattaya and Krabi also emerged as the second and third most crowded destinations globally.

Thailand dominated the top 10 list of overcrowded destinations, followed by Greece and Turkey. Heraklion in Greece secured the seventh position with 22 tourists per local resident, while Venice in Italy registered 21 tourists per resident, underscoring the issue of overcrowding in popular tourist spots.

Simone Venturini, the newly appointed mayor of Venice, recently unveiled plans to implement a controversial tourist fee for visitors entering the historic city, making Venice the first destination to introduce an entry charge in 2024, starting at €5 during peak months from April to July.

The fee structure was later revised, with last-minute visitors facing a charge of €10, approximately £8.60, to mitigate overcrowding in Venice during peak periods, given the estimated annual influx of around 30 million tourists.

Local authorities aimed to use the levy to alleviate congestion in the historic city and deter excessive tourist visits during peak times. Plans are underway to potentially raise the entry fee to €50, as proposed by Mr. Venturini. Rhodes in Greece and Miami in the US also made the list of overcrowded destinations, highlighting the global issue of tourism congestion.
