“UK Implements Restrictions on Foreign Political Donations”

Donors relocating to the UK will now face restrictions on making large political contributions for a minimum of one year to prevent foreign funds from influencing elections. The new regulations, effective starting this Monday, will strengthen the cap on political donations exceeding £100,000 from international sources. This measure aims to prevent individuals who have recently moved to the UK from bypassing the rules, regardless of their voter registration status.

Under the revised guidelines, individuals who relocate to the UK, for instance, in July 2026, will be required to reside in the country for the rest of 2026 and the entire calendar year of 2027 before being allowed to donate amounts exceeding the specified cap starting from January 1, 2028.

The adjustment is expected to impact parties like Reform UK, which has received substantial funding from Christopher Harborne, a crypto billionaire based in Thailand. Mr. Harborne, who recently registered to vote in the UK, previously commented on Labour’s efforts to curb foreign donations, suggesting that determined individuals will find ways to contribute.

In addition to these changes, new measures will be implemented to impose stricter scrutiny on company donations, enhance transparency requirements for candidates, and close loopholes that could be exploited by those seeking to meddle in UK elections.

The government’s reforms, stemming from a review conducted by former senior civil servant Philip Rycroft on foreign financial intervention, will be presented through amendments to the ongoing Representation of the People Bill. The comprehensive response to the review will be released on Monday.

Furthermore, the legislation will alter the eligibility criteria for companies making political contributions and set a limit of £100,000 per year for donations from overseas voters.

According to a report by the Mirror, political parties and politicians could face fines up to £20,000 or up to seven years in prison if they fail to verify whether a company donation complies with the new regulations. Company donations will be restricted based on their profit margins to ensure that only legitimate UK-linked entities can contribute transparently, accountably, and in line with their actual financial status.

Earlier in March, the government announced a temporary halt on cryptocurrency donations to political entities until sufficient regulatory measures are in place, as determined by the Electoral Commission and Parliament.

Steve Reed, the Communities Secretary, emphasized the importance of safeguarding British democracy against foreign influence by implementing these stringent rules. By raising the standards for overseas donors and demanding transparency from candidates regarding their funding sources, the government aims to safeguard the integrity of elections and address external threats effectively.

Recent disclosures revealed that the majority of donations received by Reform last year, totaling £18.6 million, originated from individuals with offshore connections, constituting nearly 80% of the party’s funding.

In terms of donations received this year, Reform significantly outpaced Labour and the Conservatives, with Labour raising £4 million and the Conservatives securing £4.2 million in the same period. The Green Party received £263,884 in donations, while the Liberal Democrats obtained £3,019,235.
