“Woman sentenced to life for husband’s murder”

A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her husband after claiming he fell in their kitchen onto a small paring knife. Daryl Berman, 72, was found guilty of the murder of her husband David Berman, 84, who suffered a fatal chest wound in an incident at their home in Prestwich. The sentencing took place at Minshull Street Crown Court, where Berman received a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years, with 192 days already spent in custody to be deducted from her sentence.

During the trial, it was revealed that the couple had a 27-year marriage described as loving and mutually supportive, with no history of domestic violence or police involvement. However, Berman’s behavior following her husband’s death raised suspicions among family members, with prosecutors noting her emotionless demeanor during the grieving process.

The court heard that Mr Berman, who had been diagnosed with dementia, suffered a fatal stab wound that was deemed inconsistent with an accidental fall. The pathologist’s report indicated the wound exhibited characteristics typical of homicide, further supported by a defensive wound on Mr Berman’s finger.

In her defense, Berman maintained that the incident was an accident, claiming she heard a noise from the kitchen where her husband had fallen. However, the prosecution argued that Berman’s account lacked consistency and raised doubts about the nature of the events leading to her husband’s death.

Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson expressed sympathy for the victim’s family and emphasized the importance of seeking justice in the case. He highlighted the post-mortem examination findings that debunked Berman’s initial explanation and led to her conviction for murder, offering some closure to the grieving family.
