A renowned figure from London’s West End has unveiled a previously undisclosed love affair with Prince Edward. Ruthie Henshall, aged 59, has exposed details of their relationship, including finding “HRH Edward” sewn into the prince’s undergarments and leaving him tired the following morning.
In her newly published book, “The Showgirl and the Prince,” Henshall delves into the intricacies of their five-year romance, recounting how they crossed paths when the prince, then 23 years old, departed the Royal Marines to work under Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theater company.
Amid media scrutiny over Edward’s decision to depart military training, with reports emphasizing his father’s disapproval, the prince transitioned into the theater world. Henshall reminisces that their initial companionship blossomed into a love affair, fueled partly by his royal status.
Their early encounters included a surprising visit to Buckingham Palace, where Henshall stumbled upon Edward’s personalized undergarments marked with “HRH Edward.” She rationalized that the unique labeling was necessary due to the Palace staff handling laundry duties.
Serialized in the Mail, Henshall’s book also reveals Edward’s desire to progress their relationship cautiously. Following their first intimate moment, the prince penned a thoughtful letter expressing his wish to not rush their physical intimacy.
According to Henshall, Edward frequently sent her handwritten notes on Buckingham Palace stationery, signed with kisses rather than his name, and often surprised her with freesia flowers, her preferred blossom.
Their intimate encounter in January 1989 left Henshall praising Edward for his tenderness and romance, albeit humorously mentioning that she left him groggy when he had to rise early for work the next day.
Their relationship opened doors to royal experiences for Henshall, culminating in an introduction to Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle. Despite momentarily forgetting royal protocol, she engaged in tea with members of the Royal Family, including Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, and Sarah Ferguson.
Henshall reflects on numerous cherished moments from their discreet five-year liaison, mostly shielded from the public eye. The memoir is scheduled for release on July 16, 2026, with Buckingham Palace approached for potential comments.
