Labour’s groundbreaking general secretary, Hollie Ridley, has made public her decision to step down from her position following the party’s annual conference later this year. Ridley, a key supporter of Keir Starmer and hailed as a significant figure in the Labour Party, cited personal reasons for her resignation when addressing party staff. She expressed her commitment to supporting the future party leader and Prime Minister in advancing the agenda for change and securing a crucial second term in government.
During the announcement, Ridley emphasized that stepping aside was the right choice to enable the Labour Party’s governing body, the National Executive Committee (NEC), to select a new General Secretary to collaborate with the incoming leader. This development follows Starmer’s recent declaration to resign as Labour leader and Prime Minister, with Andy Burnham poised to succeed him unopposed on July 20.
Praising Ridley’s contributions, Starmer lauded her as an outstanding campaigner who rose through the party ranks from a trainee organizer to the top echelons through dedication and belief in Labour’s mission for the working class. The Prime Minister acknowledged Ridley’s instrumental role in steering the ground campaign that led to the party’s general election victory and kickstarted transformative changes in Britain.
Labour chair Anna Turley commended Ridley as a trailblazing advocate, highly respected by party members and staff for her unwavering commitment and exceptional campaigning skills. Similarly, senior Labour Cabinet minister Pat McFadden hailed Ridley as a hero of the party, recognizing her pivotal role in securing the 2024 General Election triumph and her relentless pursuit of excellence in campaigning and leadership.
Growing up in Dagenham, Ridley, the daughter of a family support worker and a lorry driver, began her Labour journey as a trainee organizer in 2011. Over the years, she has been instrumental in championing opportunities for women within the party, notably spearheading the Jo Cox Women in Leadership program. Reflecting on her career, Ridley highlighted her determination to challenge stereotypes and create space for working-class women to effect positive change in their communities.
Ridley’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Labour’s leadership, with tributes pouring in from various party figures recognizing her indelible impact and legacy within the party.
