“TikTok UK Boosts Water Safety, Saves Lives”

TikTok UK has stepped up to support water safety initiatives in the UK, potentially saving lives in the future. The social media platform has pledged £400,000 in advertising credit to key water safety charities, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK). This contribution will enable these organizations to effectively reach out to teenagers and young adults with essential water safety tips just in time for the upcoming summer season.

The move by TikTok UK has been lauded as a significant breakthrough by Simon Haycock, a father who tragically lost his 16-year-old son, Sam, to drowning in a reservoir. Simon, who spearheaded the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety campaign, expressed relief and optimism about the impact of TikTok’s involvement in spreading crucial safety messages to the younger demographic.

The Mirror’s campaign, launched after a spate of water-related fatalities last May, has gained momentum with TikTok’s support. Through this collaboration, the RNLI will share practical advice on coastal safety, emphasizing the importance of lifeguarded beaches and understanding the risks associated with open water activities. Meanwhile, RLSS UK will leverage the partnership to promote its ‘Speak up. Be A Mate’ campaign, advocating for peer intervention in risky water situations.

TikTok’s initiative aims to provide accessible and trustworthy water safety guidance to its users, particularly young people who are at a heightened risk of drowning, especially during hot weather conditions. By partnering with renowned water safety organizations, TikTok seeks to make vital safety information available to a wider audience, potentially saving lives not just in the current summer but in the years to come.

The generous support from TikTok will help amplify the water safety campaigns of RNLI and RLSS UK, enabling them to reach a broader audience across the UK and educate them on making informed decisions when near open water bodies. Ara Yoo, TikTok’s Head of Product Impact, emphasized the platform’s commitment to disseminating relevant safety advice in a manner that resonates with users, empowering them with the knowledge and confidence to stay safe during water-related activities.

The joint efforts of TikTok, RNLI, and RLSS UK underscore the importance of proactive measures in preventing drowning incidents, especially among young individuals. By leveraging digital platforms and strategic partnerships, these organizations aim to equip individuals with the necessary skills and awareness to enjoy water activities safely, fostering a culture of water safety and prevention in the community.
