A major explosion has shaken Monaco, leaving a Ukrainian billionaire oligarch and his wife in critical condition. Vadim Ermolaev, aged 58, is a prominent real estate tycoon and the 23rd wealthiest individual in Ukraine as per Forbes rankings. Following Russia’s incursion into Ukraine, Ermolaev reportedly fled the country.
Authorities are searching for a suspect who was caught on CCTV discarding a backpack on Rue du Révérend Père Louis Frolla. Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, described the incident as a “deliberate explosion.” The explosive device is believed to have contained bolts and shot, causing severe injuries to Ermolaev and his partner, as well as a 13-year-old boy who sustained minor injuries.
The suspect fled on foot towards Beausoleil, a town bordering France. A significant police presence has been established at the scene, with a helicopter aiding in the search for the suspect. French rescue teams are collaborating with Monaco authorities in the investigation.
Ermolaev, known for his business ventures in real estate and other industries, has faced sanctions in Ukraine since December 2023 due to his business activities in Russian-occupied Crimea. The suspect’s escape into France has heightened the manhunt, with law enforcement deploying additional resources to locate and apprehend him. The incident marks a rare occurrence in Monaco’s history, prompting solidarity and support from local officials and residents for the victims and emergency responders involved.
