Pele’s World Cup Shirt Sells for £42,000 at Auction

A shirt worn by legendary footballer Pele during a World Cup tournament has fetched a remarkable 70 times its initial estimate at an auction. Simultaneously, a ticket from the 1930 World Cup final was sold for an impressive £4,200.

The auctioneers were pleasantly surprised by the high prices achieved, attributing the fervor to the ongoing success of the current World Cup, particularly England’s advancement to the round of 32. The Pele shirt, worn either in the 1966 or 1970 tournament, was expected to sell for £600 to £800 but was ultimately sold for £42,000.

David Convery, the head of sporting memorabilia at BUDDS auctioneers, expressed his astonishment at the sale, stating that it exemplifies Pele’s enduring impact on the sport and the lasting connection fans have with his legacy. He also highlighted the significance of a ticket from the 1930 World Cup final, emphasizing the historical value it holds for football enthusiasts.

The auction also featured the shirts worn by David Beckham during a notable match in which he was sent off as England’s captain, selling for £26,000. Beckham made history as the first player to receive two red cards while playing for the England national team.

Convery remarked on Beckham’s enduring popularity in the memorabilia market, noting the unique opportunity to own shirts worn by the player during a pivotal moment in his England career. The auction items were described as highly sought-after by collectors for their authenticity and historical significance.

The incident where Beckham was sent off in 2005 during a World Cup qualifying match between England and Austria at Old Trafford in Manchester was recalled, with both Beckham and England’s manager expressing dissatisfaction with the red card decision. The match remains a significant chapter in English football history, adding to the appeal of the auctioned shirts.
