The UK’s commandos are in line for a substantial £500 million increase under adjustments to the long-awaited defense investment plan. This boost will include the allocation of high-speed boats and strike drones to the elite force, with a specific focus on the High North region, encompassing the Arctic Circle and surrounding areas, due to escalating Russian activities in the vicinity.
Recently, Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis reportedly secured an additional £1 billion for the defense investment plan, on top of the £13.5 billion proposal that led to his predecessor, John Healey, resigning in objection. The plan, originally scheduled for release last year, faced delays due to disagreements within the government regarding the required military funding.
Jarvis has shifted the investment plan’s focus towards equipping frontline troops with essential gear since assuming the role of Defence Secretary. The allocated funds are expected to finance new high-speed commando insertion craft, specialized vessels for covert troop transport by the rapid-response force, potentially utilized for operations such as seizing Russian shadow fleet tankers.
Moreover, approximately £100 million will be dedicated to new technologies, including unmanned vessels, advanced communication systems, and strike drones. Jarvis highlighted significant progress in recent developments, emphasizing the ongoing effort to ensure accuracy before the anticipated publication before July 7.
Expressing his commitment to the task, Jarvis stated, “I’ve been diligently working to ensure the appropriate resources and capabilities are in place. The defense investment plan aims to prioritize equipping frontline forces with cutting-edge equipment to support their critical missions in an increasingly hazardous global environment.”
