“Virgin Media O2 to Shutdown 2G Network by 2029”

In the UK, while most new phones are now utilizing fast 4G and 5G networks, the older 2G network from 1993 is still in use for some devices like phones, alarms, and health equipment. However, Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to shut down the 2G network in 2029 as part of its network modernization strategy to enhance future connectivity.

This move by Virgin Media O2 signifies a significant step in their efforts to upgrade their infrastructure, focusing on expanding and enhancing their 4G and 5G networks. The company anticipates that retiring the 2G network will enable them to allocate resources towards delivering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and reduced energy consumption, addressing the evolving consumer demands.

Jeanie York, the Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, stated, “We are investing £700m this year to revolutionize our mobile network and cater to the increasing consumer needs. By phasing out the old 2G network, we aim to provide all customers with the dependable and efficient mobile services they expect.”

With the closure set for 2029, customers and businesses will have ample time to prepare and transition any devices reliant on 2G to newer technologies. Despite the historical significance of 2G in pioneering mobile communication, the shift away from it aligns with the industry’s progression towards advanced connectivity options like 4G and 5G that offer enhanced capabilities and performance.
