Parts of England are set to experience thunderstorms with frequent lightning strikes and heavy rain affecting various regions.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms this afternoon, effective until 9pm.
According to the Met Office forecast, a moving area of thunderstorms will bring frequent lightning, gusty winds, torrential rain, and potential hail in some places.
While the storms are expected to move swiftly, reducing the risk of widespread heavy rainfall, localized areas could see 20-25 mm of rain in a short time, leading to possible brief flooding.
Although the main impacts are likely to be from lightning strikes causing power outages, challenging driving conditions in heavy rain, and potential damage to vulnerable structures from strong winds or hail.
An amber warning for extreme heat is also in effect. The thunderstorm warning covers areas in East of England, London, South East England, and South West England.
The Met Office warns of possible damage to buildings and structures from lightning strikes or hail, as well as potential disruptions to driving conditions due to spray, standing water, or hail, resulting in longer travel times by car and bus.
Other storm impacts could include train service delays and temporary power cuts. Individuals are advised to assess the risk of flash flooding to their residences and businesses and take necessary precautions.
The Met Office advises seeking shelter in a safe enclosed space, such as a car, upon hearing thunder outdoors. It is essential not to seek shelter near trees or structures that could be struck by lightning.
For those in elevated areas, moving to lower ground is recommended. The public should stay alert as weather warnings may change rapidly.
