Inspector Shaz Bassi, who is leading the initiative, emphasized the importance of creating positive interactions with the public, especially for those who may not have had previous encounters with law enforcement. Building trust and confidence with the community is a key priority, as most people attend events to have a good time and appreciate the police presence.
The initiative involved over 100 officers monitoring the Summertime Ball at Wembley, with larger events seeing even more personnel deployed. This effort comes in the wake of public trust challenges following high-profile cases like the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard by a Metropolitan police officer and multiple incidents of sexual assault.
Statistics released by the Met indicate a positive impact from their approach. Reports of violence against women and girls have increased significantly compared to the previous year, demonstrating a higher level of awareness and reporting within the community. The Met’s central Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) team has played a crucial role in implementing successful strategies to combat violence.
Training on VAWG issues has been provided to 23,000 Met officers and staff, and the force has enhanced specialized victim support services in response to these challenges. The proactive measures taken by the Metropolitan police aim to foster a safer environment and stronger relationships with the public at large events.
