Ukraine has initiated a significant attack by deploying more than 1,000 explosive drones into Russia from Kyiv. This assault marks one of the largest offensives against Russia since the conflict began. Approximately 200 Kamikaze drones were directed towards Moscow, specifically targeting the major oil refinery for the second time in recent days, resulting in substantial fires. The assault on Moscow lasted three hours, commencing at 4 am and concluding at 7 am local time, leading to massive plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky.
Additionally, Ukraine launched four cruise missiles into Russia, with President Volodymyr Zelensky asserting that they are taking the fight to the Kremlin. Zelensky issued a warning, stating, “If Ukraine burns, your Moscow will burn too.” He emphasized that the recent strikes were in response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and communities, aiming to disrupt facilities supporting Russia’s war efforts. The President called for an end to the conflict and urged Russia to engage in diplomatic solutions.
Following the attacks, fires broke out at the Kapotnya refinery in southeast Moscow, marking the third strike in a month and the second in a week. The destruction included multiple large oil storage tanks, causing a nearby shopping center to catch fire after drone debris landed on the building. Evacuations were carried out in several residential high-rise buildings as a precautionary measure.
The impact of Ukraine’s deep-strike drone missions within Russia has severely hampered the Kremlin’s financial resources for the invasion of Ukraine. Furthermore, Kyiv has bolstered its arms industry, enabling the production of thousands of drones monthly, leading to over 5,000 medium and long-range attacks per month. This strategy has significantly strained Vladimir Putin’s war budget, resulting in shortages across Russia and affecting fuel supplies to frontline troops.
In response to the escalating conflict, world leaders at the G7 summit in France pledged to impose further sanctions on Russia, particularly targeting its oil and gas sector. The signing of the Iran memorandum of understanding indicates a shift in focus towards Ukraine in the upcoming weeks. There are speculations that US President Donald Trump may reconsider his stance on Russia as Ukraine gains momentum in the conflict, potentially influencing his position towards Putin.
