The victim of a recent stabbing incident in Belfast has emerged from a medically induced coma; however, there are concerns that he may lose vision in his right eye, according to his family. Stephen Ogilvie sustained severe injuries, including the loss of his left eye and deep cuts to his head, face, and back during the attack at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast. Hadi Alodid, aged 30, has been charged with attempted murder in relation to the incident and is scheduled to appear before the Belfast Magistrates’ Court via videolink on July 8.
In a recent update, Mr. Ogilvie’s family expressed gratitude for the support received following the attack, noting that while they are relieved he is no longer in a coma, he still faces significant challenges, including potential vision loss in his right eye. The family acknowledged the overwhelming kindness shown by numerous individuals, many of whom are strangers to them.
Alodid, a Sudanese national, entered Northern Ireland from the Irish border in February 2023 after flying to Dublin from Paris. He sought asylum upon arrival and was granted permission to stay in the UK until 2028. A distressing video capturing the stabbing incident circulated widely online, prompting public figures like Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson to call for action.
Following the incident, there were outbreaks of anti-immigration violence, resulting in property damage, including homes, cars, and a bus set ablaze, and targeted attacks based on race. Law enforcement has made 35 arrests and charged 23 individuals in connection with the unrest.
