“Man to Stand Trial for Golders Green Memorial Arson”

A man is set to face trial after being accused of arson in connection with a fire at a memorial wall in Golders Green, located in north London. Ali Fallahi, a 45-year-old individual from Ilford, London, is facing charges related to the suspected arson incident that occurred on April 27 at Limes Avenue.

Following an investigation conducted by counter-terrorism police, Fallahi is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, June 18. The allegations against Fallahi involve the destruction by fire of a memorial cabinet belonging to Miga Rally, with the intention to damage or destroy the property, or acting recklessly in that regard.

The memorial wall, established by the Miga Rally community group, serves as a tribute to numerous protesters purportedly killed in an Iran crackdown in January. Additionally, a section of the wall is dedicated to the individuals who lost their lives in the Hamas attack during the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023.

The fire, which ignited around 12:15 am in a cabinet adjacent to the wall, was reported later that day at approximately 7:30 pm. Fortunately, the blaze was promptly noticed and extinguished by the Miga Rally community group, preventing it from spreading to the wall itself.

In response to the incident, Miga Rally issued a statement emphasizing the sanctity of the memorial wall as a peaceful place of remembrance. They condemned any attempts to damage or disrespect such a significant site, highlighting the values of remembrance, dignity, and community cohesion that it represents.

The Metropolitan Police disclosed that Fallahi holds dual British and Iranian citizenship. A 38-year-old woman was also detained in connection with the arson but was subsequently released without further action.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counter-terrorism policing in London, emphasized the significance of the charge against Fallahi in the ongoing investigations of arson attacks targeting the Jewish community and Iranian diaspora in London. The authorities are resolute in their commitment to bringing all perpetrators of such incidents to justice and urge the public to report any suspicious activities.
