“Politicians Call for Urgent Action on Water Safety”

Politicians convened in central Westminster yesterday to urge the government to take action on water safety before the upcoming school holidays. The plea followed the tragic drowning deaths of 13 children and six adults during the recent heatwave. Among the attendees was Lee Pitcher, Member of Parliament for Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme, who has been a staunch advocate for safeguarding children around water.

Pitcher emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further tragedies, especially with the anticipated hot summer and increased alcohol consumption due to the World Cup. He called for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of unsupervised water activities.

Leading the Private Members’ Bill Sam’s Law on water safety, Pitcher joined other MPs, sports figures, activists, and grieving families in supporting the Save Lives for Sam initiative by the Mirror. The campaign aims to push the government to launch an educational drive prior to the six-week school summer break, focusing on teaching young individuals how to stay safe in and near water.

The event also saw Simon Haycock, father of 16-year-old Sam who tragically passed away in a reservoir incident, cautioning about the complexities of swimming in open water. Similarly, Vanessa Abbess shared the heartbreaking story of her son Joe, 17, who lost his life in a rip current off Bournemouth beach.

Jim Dickson, MP for Dartford, highlighted a recent drowning tragedy in his constituency, underscoring the critical need for enhanced water safety awareness both in schools and across society. The gathering was organized by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, with Pete Kennedy emphasizing the urgency of preventive measures and timely dissemination of life-saving information.

Multiple organizations, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the RNLI, and Swim England, have joined forces with the Mirror, MPs, and affected families to advocate for improved water safety measures. Olympic icons Becky Adlington, Tom Dean, and Michael Gunnin have also lent their support to the cause.

The collective effort aims for a comprehensive approach to water safety, emphasizing education and awareness to prevent further tragedies.
