Unborn baby dies in police pursuit crash tragedy

A tragic car crash resulting from a police pursuit has led to the death of an unborn baby carried by a young woman in her 20s. The incident occurred late in the evening on June 13 when a car driven by the baby’s father was struck by a vehicle fleeing from the police in Lewisham Way.

The chase was initiated after law enforcement officers noticed cloned number plates on the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the pregnant woman’s baby did not survive, while she herself was taken to the hospital by the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. Fortunately, her condition is stable, and she is receiving treatment. The driver of their vehicle escaped unharmed.

The 29-year-old driver of the fleeing car was apprehended on suspicion of various offenses, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, and possession of class A drugs. He also sustained injuries in the crash but is in a non-life-threatening condition.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic incident, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been informed due to the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death following the police pursuit. Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed condolences to the affected family and urged anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward.

Individuals with information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to contact the police at 101, quoting CAD 8670/13JUN. The crime scene has been cleared, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the full details of the events leading to this heartbreaking outcome.
