Royal Marine commandos successfully raided a Russian shadow fleet vessel in the Channel, according to the Prime Minister, who emphasized that Putin’s allies will not remain hidden. The British forces conducted a unique six-hour operation in the English Channel to board the covert ship named Smyrtos. The vessel will now be temporarily anchored off the south coast of England for environmental and safety monitoring.
In a statement, Sir Keir Starmer highlighted the significance of the operation in dealing a blow to Russia and its supporters of Putin’s actions in Ukraine. He commended the armed forces and law enforcement for ensuring the country’s safety around the clock.
Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis praised the skill, professionalism, and bravery displayed in the operation, emphasizing its impact on disrupting Russia’s shadow fleet funding their conflict in Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense noted that the operation, despite Russian attempts to evade sanctions, aimed to thwart the support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The operation was supported by various aircraft and naval vessels, including the Maritime Air Group, RAF P-8 aircraft, HMS Sutherland, and HMS Ledbury, in coordination with French forces. By targeting the shadow fleet responsible for transporting a significant portion of Russia’s sanctioned oil, the UK and its allies aim to reduce Russia’s capacity to threaten security in Europe and beyond.
The UK’s proactive stance in sanctioning over 500 vessels associated with the shadow fleet has already shown results, with a significant decline in Russia’s oil and gas revenues. This latest action underscores the UK’s commitment to enforcing sanctions and safeguarding national security against threats posed by Russia’s illegal activities.
