“Lammy Endorses Starmer, Warns Against Party Disputes”

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy expressed his backing for Keir Starmer in a potential leadership contest against Andy Burnham. Lammy described Starmer as remarkably resilient and emphasized his support for Starmer’s continuation of his mandate received from the public less than two years ago.

In a recent statement to Sky News, Lammy highlighted Starmer’s commitment to participating in any leadership challenge, stressing the importance of allowing him to fulfill his mandate. While acknowledging Burnham’s talent, Lammy refrained from offering advice to Burnham, citing their regular communication.

Starmer, reaffirming his dedication to his role, stated his reluctance to engage in internal party disputes amid the current global challenges. Burnham, on the other hand, confirmed his intent to enter a leadership race pending his return to Parliament, contingent on securing the support of 81 fellow MPs.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has already declared his candidacy, but Prime Minister expressed his resolve to remain in office, emphasizing the need to focus on governing rather than internal party conflicts. The PM cautioned against distractions from vital national decisions due to potential party upheavals, underscoring the critical nature of the current global landscape.
