“Driver Sentenced to 3 Years for Drugged Driving Crash”

A driver under the influence of cocaine and alcohol, causing a collision with a police vehicle and leaving an officer with severe injuries, has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison. Shaun Orchard, aged 23, was involved in a high-speed chase in Stockport on April 22 the previous year. The officer, identified as PC Rushton, sustained life-changing injuries and expressed profound impacts on his life.

Orchard took his stepfather’s car after consuming alcohol and cocaine at a pub, leading to a pursuit by the police. He was seen on Crookilley Way near Bredbury Interchange around 3:50 am before speeding onto the M60, where he drove recklessly at speeds up to 120mph. As the pursuit continued, Orchard exited the motorway and drove at around 100mph on a 30mph road, eventually colliding with PC Rushton’s vehicle at a red light intersection on Hyde Road.

PC Rushton suffered significant injuries, including fractured ribs, a complex ankle fracture, a fractured arm, and other injuries. He spoke emotionally in court, highlighting the profound impact the incident had on his physical and emotional well-being. The crash occurred shortly before his wedding, causing anxiety about his future and family plans.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Orchard had high levels of alcohol and drugs in his system at the time of the incident. Judge Kevin Slack emphasized the deliberate disregard for road rules and the dangerous driving behavior exhibited by Orchard. In addition to the prison sentence, Orchard was banned from driving for five and a half years after pleading guilty to aggravated vehicle taking and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Detective Constable Adrian Beckford of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit condemned Orchard’s actions, emphasizing the danger posed to the public and police officers during the pursuit. He praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved in bringing Orchard to justice and highlighted the ongoing impact on PC Rushton’s life due to the injuries sustained in the collision.
