Mother’s Warning: Toddler Falls Ill After Ingesting Garden Plant

A mother of four is cautioning fellow parents about the risks associated with a common garden plant after her one-year-old daughter fell ill during a family outing.

Daisy Hall’s youngest child, Winnie, ingested a rhododendron while in her stroller at Attingham Park in Shropshire. Daisy, 34, recounted, “I put her back in her stroller, and she must have grabbed a plant and started chewing on it.”

Upon realizing what had occurred, Daisy researched online and learned that the flower is highly poisonous to humans. She promptly took Winnie to the hospital, where doctors administered activated charcoal mixed with water to prevent the absorption of the poison.

The toddler underwent monitoring with an ECG for six hours before being discharged. She was then observed at home for an additional 24 hours. Rhododendrons contain grayanotoxins, which can be toxic if consumed, leading to symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, and vomiting in both humans and animals.

Fortunately, Daisy’s recent interest in gardening enabled her to identify the plant. She sought advice from her mother, Debbie, 63, a nurse, before contacting NHS 111 on the way to the hospital.

Daisy remarked, “If I had waited for an ambulance, she would likely have missed the charcoal treatment window.”

At the hospital, they received prompt care and the necessary charcoal. Daisy explained, “The charcoal must be administered within an hour to prevent absorption of the poison. It was challenging to give it to her, hence we were covered in black.”

Thankfully, Winnie fully recovered. Daisy shared her story online, garnering over 7.1 million views with her cautionary tale.

She stated, “People online have mentioned that they would not have thought to check the plant. It has changed their perspective, prompting them to research before dismissing it. Individuals have shared information about other toxic plants, fostering a collective learning experience.”
