“Russian Military Injured at Europe’s Top Nuclear Plant”

Russian military personnel sustained injuries in a significant event at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed being notified of the incident that occurred during demining operations following a local ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

The ceasefire, established for power line restoration crucial in averting a potential nuclear crisis at the facility, was put in place due to power outages caused by regional conflicts. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s biggest and among the world’s top 10, has been under Russian control since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the need for military restraint and strict adherence to the ceasefire to ensure the safety efforts continue. The exact details of the recent injuries are still unclear. The IAEA highlighted the urgency of repairing the plant’s main 750 kilovolt (kV) power line, citing frequent power outages since the conflict began.

The reliance on emergency generators due to attacks on power lines has left the plant vulnerable, especially with the critical 750 kV line disconnected for over two months. Mr. Grossi stressed the importance of restoring the 750 kV Dniprovska line for nuclear safety. The plant’s proximity to the conflict zone in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region has raised concerns about a potential nuclear disaster throughout the war.
