“Cambridge Airport to Transform into 10,000 Homes and 9,000 Jobs Hub”

Developers have revealed plans for a major project in the Cambridge area following the purchase of Cambridge Airport and the surrounding land. The ambitious endeavor aims to construct 10,000 new homes and generate 9,000 job opportunities.

The new proprietors, Homes England and The Hill Group, have outlined additional features for the development, including a new railway station and potential facilities such as a stadium, venues, and film studios. Andy Hill, the founder and CEO of The Hill Group, emphasized the comprehensive nature of the project, which will also involve significant infrastructure enhancements and a park and ride system.

Dubbed Cambridge East, the development is set to become one of the largest urban expansion initiatives in the UK, as confirmed by Homes England. Mr. Hill expressed enthusiasm about creating a vibrant and sustainable neighborhood within the region, highlighting the community’s involvement in shaping the masterplan.

The expansive project will encompass approximately 700 acres, encompassing the airport and adjacent land, with plans to incorporate about 3 million sq ft of commercial space. Amy Rees, the CEO of Homes England, praised the collaboration between the public and private sectors, emphasizing the positive impact of the development on the local community.

The proposed railway station at Cambridge East is intended to connect residents to key locations such as central Cambridge, London, Bedford, and Oxford. The relocation of the Marshall Group’s operations by 2029 will mark the beginning of the development, with an initial phase of up to 500 homes planned for the same year.

Peter Freeman CBE, Chair of the Cambridge Growth Company, highlighted the transformative potential of the project, describing it as a unique opportunity to create a remarkable new neighborhood for future generations. Housing Secretary Steve Reed commended the initiative, stating that it aligns with the country’s need for innovative communities offering housing, employment, transportation, and green spaces.

The collaboration between The Hill Group and Homes England signifies a significant step towards realizing the vision for Cambridge East, aiming to establish a model community that caters to the needs and aspirations of its residents.
