“UK Soldier James Freeman Dies in Iraq Training Accident”

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that Lance Corporal James Freeman, a 29-year-old soldier of the Royal Anglian Regiment, tragically lost his life in a training incident at an air base in Erbil, northern Iraq. The incident, which occurred during routine training for Operation Shader, the UK’s anti-Islamic State campaign, also claimed the life of an American soldier.

The MoD expressed deep regret over the accident and extended condolences to Freeman’s family and friends. Described as a dedicated and experienced soldier with a bright future, Freeman had served in various locations, including South Sudan, Cyprus, the Falklands, and more.

Defence Secretary John Healey mourned Freeman’s passing, highlighting his commitment and professionalism. Lieutenant Samuel Frost, Freeman’s Platoon Commander, praised him as an impressive soldier, emphasizing his significant contributions and the impact of his loss on the company.

Corporal William Thorpe, Freeman’s close friend, fondly remembered him as a reliable and supportive companion, acknowledging his pivotal role in personal and professional growth. The identity of the American soldier involved in the accident has not been disclosed yet.
