Jill Biden has disclosed the conversation she had with her husband Joe following the memorable TV debate clash with Donald Trump.
During the debate in June 2024, the former US president’s lackluster performance against his Republican opponent marked a turning point in his presidential campaign, as he struggled to articulate coherent responses and appeared disoriented.
Initially, Jill praised Joe for doing a “great job” and addressing all the questions. However, in her latest memoir, “View from the East Wing,” she reveals her concerns that Joe might have been “having a stroke” during the live debate. The book provides new insights into their post-debate discussions.
According to an excerpt from the memoir obtained by the Atlantic, Joe privately admitted his mistake, asking, “I really messed up, didn’t I?” upon exiting the stage, to which Jill candidly replied in agreement.
She also mentioned that medical professionals promptly examined the then-president after the debate, reassuring her that he was in good health. Despite her private worries, Jill maintained a supportive demeanor in public, praising Joe and leading a cheer for “four more years” at a post-debate event.
However, just 24 days later, facing mounting pressure from Democratic leaders, Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, citing the best interests of his party and the country in a letter to refocus on his duties as President.
In her recent memoir, Jill critiques the White House’s communication strategy of attributing Joe’s poor performance to a cold, suggesting they should have acknowledged his apparent health concerns more transparently. She notes the lack of a satisfactory explanation for Joe’s debate performance, which left many unsettled.
The memoir also delves into Joe Biden’s battle with prostate cancer post-presidency, detailing the early signs that emerged during their final White House year. Joe underwent intensive radiation treatment and hormone therapy, while the family faced allegations of concealing his illness, leading to defensive responses.
