The recent heatwave in Britain has led to a surge in sales for the staycation industry. Record high temperatures have attracted a large number of day-trippers and increased overnight stays, coinciding with the bank holiday weekend and school breaks. Awaze, a prominent holiday rental provider in Europe, has observed a notable increase in last-minute bookings for coastal destinations in Britain.
Bookings for seaside accommodations in north-west England through Cottages.com have spiked by 50% in the past week, while Hoseasons has seen a 62% year-on-year rise in bookings for seaside homes. Popular destinations include Whitby, Bridlington, Filey, Great Yarmouth, Bude, and Weston-Super-Mare.
Besides the heatwave, Awaze attributes the surge in demand to a reluctance to travel abroad due to cost and potential travel disruptions. Matthew Price, the company’s CEO, highlighted the appeal of traditional coastal hotspots offering convenience, affordability, and flexibility for holidaymakers looking for quality breaks closer to home.
Julie Dalton, managing director at Gulliver’s Theme Parks and Resorts, noted that scorching temperatures deterred some visitors initially but mentioned a positive shift in visitor numbers lately. Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcement to reduce VAT on summer attractions and children’s meals is expected to provide additional support to the tourism industry.
Ms. Dalton remains cautious about the impact of these measures, emphasizing the need for time to assess their effectiveness. The tourism sector anticipates relief from the Chancellor’s initiative to reduce ticket prices for summer attractions, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on families during the holiday season.
