A senior citizen who was struck by a vehicle during the Liverpool FC celebratory parade recalls the harrowing incident as survivors commemorate the event’s one-year anniversary. Stefan Dettlaff, 74, was with his wife Hilda when Paul Doyle’s car crashed into fans following the Reds’ championship parade in Liverpool city center.
Doyle, a married ex-Marine, used his vehicle as a weapon to drive through the crowds celebrating the Premier League victory on May 26 the previous year. Within a brief span, his car hit over 130 individuals, causing chaos as supporters screamed and parents rushed to protect their children. Amid the chaos, a baby was thrown 15 feet into the air.
Despite the mayhem, there were no fatalities in Doyle’s rampage, and he was subsequently sentenced to 21 years and six months in prison. While Mr. Dettlaff sustained multiple injuries including six broken ribs and a shoulder injury, his wife also suffered injuries after being thrown onto the car’s bonnet.
Reflecting on the traumatic experience, Mr. Dettlaff expressed how the memories of that day still haunt him, causing fear and anxiety triggered by everyday sounds. The couple, residents of Birkenhead, have physically recovered but continue to grapple with the psychological aftermath of the incident.
Similarly, former British soldier Dan Eveson, 37, recounted the terrifying moments when his family narrowly escaped death during the violent episode. He vividly remembers the sudden shift from celebratory chants to chaos as Doyle’s car accelerated towards them, causing severe injuries to his family members.
Eveson, who had to leave his job due to his injuries, emphasized the lasting impact on his mental well-being, struggling with sleep disturbances and mistrust of crowds. He also expressed his persistent anger towards Doyle for the devastation inflicted on his family and the subsequent hardships they endure.
As survivors recount the traumatic event, they emphasize the lasting repercussions on their lives, both physically and emotionally. Despite the passage of time, the scars from that fateful day continue to affect their day-to-day existence, serving as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the resilience required to overcome such senseless acts of violence.
