More than 1.5 million Muslims have gathered in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, an event known as one of the largest religious congregations globally. Each year, worshippers from around the world travel to Mecca to fulfill this sacred journey, considered a fundamental aspect of Islam that many followers aim to undertake at least once in their lifetime.
During the pilgrimage, participants engage in various significant rituals over several days, including circumambulating the Kaaba, a revered cubic structure covered in black cloth at the heart of Mecca’s Grand Mosque, and assembling at Mount Arafat for prayers and contemplation. The Hajj occurs during Dhul Hujjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, with the Day of Arafah, a significant Islamic holiday, commencing on Tuesday.
This year’s Hajj coincides with heightened regional tensions amidst the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Despite this backdrop, over 1.5 million pilgrims have already entered Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage, with further arrivals expected, as stated by Saleh bin Saad al-Murabba, head of the Hajj passport forces.

The central day of Hajj, Arafat, is followed by rituals at Muzdalifah and the symbolic Stoning of the pillars, culminating in the Eid al-Adha sacrifice and a final Tawaf before departing Mecca.
As pilgrims endure the scorching temperatures in Mecca, they are seen utilizing umbrellas and handheld fans for shade and comfort. Volunteers provide water bottles to ensure hydration, while water-spraying fans offer relief amidst the intense heat. The pilgrimage also unfolds against the backdrop of diplomatic efforts to address broader Middle East tensions and discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
