A seismic event measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale jolted the southern Andes Mountains of Peru on Thursday, as per the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). No immediate damage reports have been received.
The USGS indicated that the earthquake struck at 1 p.m. local time, with its epicenter situated 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho city, in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region. The seismic activity occurred at a depth of 66 kilometers.
The tremor was felt across various regions in southern Peru, including Ica and Arequipa.
Luis Vasquez, in charge of Civil Defence, confirmed to local radio station RPP that there have been no reports of any damages so far.
Yony Reyes, the mayor of Parinacochas province, stated that there were no indications of damage in the provincial capital. The Peruvian Navy assured that there was no threat of a tsunami.
Peru experiences frequent seismic events as it is located within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for high seismic activity.
In a previous incident in 2007, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in the Ica region resulted in the loss of nearly 600 lives.
