“£500K Fine for UK Kebab Supplier’s Misleading ‘Lamb’ Labeling”

An Essex-based company supplying kebabs to takeaways and restaurants nationwide has been fined £500,000 for misleadingly selling kebabs labeled as “lamb” that were predominantly made of “skin and fat”.

During the court proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, it was revealed that Kismet Kebabs Ltd, based in Chelmsford, had been dishonest in its practices over an extended period. Prosecutors highlighted that the company deceptively marketed kebabs as containing lamb when, in reality, they mainly consisted of fat, skin, various meats, and mechanically reclaimed meat.

The firm was fined £500,000 and ordered to pay £259,298 in prosecution costs. The judge emphasized that the company had engaged in significant dishonesty by selling falsely labeled kebabs to establishments across the UK.

Investigations by Swansea Council Trading Standards uncovered that the actual meat content in the kebabs did not align with the product labels provided by Kismet Kebabs Ltd. Subsequent lab tests confirmed discrepancies between the labeled meat content and the actual meat composition.

Moreover, Essex County Council, through a partnership with Kismet Kebabs, had raised concerns regarding the company’s labeling and meat quality. The termination of this partnership was attributed to the firm’s lack of cooperation and failure to address labeling and public health issues identified during audits.

Upon a visit to Kismet Kebabs’ factory in Chelmsford, a multi-agency team led by Swansea Council Trading Standards expressed concerns about the production, packaging, and labeling practices observed. Investigations revealed that the company was using minimal lamb in products labeled as “lamb kebabs,” substituting it with fat, skin, mechanically deboned meat, and other non-lamb ingredients.

The prosecution characterized the company’s actions as organized and planned unlawful activities that misled customers and concealed information from authorities. Despite the seriousness of the offense, the court acknowledged the company’s efforts to rectify the situation and imposed a fine of £500,000, allowing for a four-year payment period.

Kismet Kebabs Ltd, established in 2008, admitted to one count of fraud by false representation. The company’s representative acknowledged the oversight during the offending period but highlighted subsequent improvements. The judge acknowledged the positive changes made by the company since the offense but emphasized the severity of the dishonest conduct during the prolonged period.
