Russia’s Rogozin Slams UK’s Starmer; Putin Defends Mission

Russia has issued a fresh threat of World War 3 towards Britain, this time directed at Sir Keir Starmer as well. Dmitry Rogozin, a senior lieutenant of Vladimir Putin, criticized Starmer as “illiterate and a fool” for proposing to station British troops in Ukraine under a peace agreement, potentially exposing the UK to missile attacks from Russia.

Describing Starmer’s plan as nonsensical, Rogozin compared it to historical events and warned of consequences for the UK if implemented. Starmer, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, announced plans to establish military bases in Ukraine to aid in defense efforts after a ceasefire.

In a contrasting narrative, Putin justified Russian military actions in Ukraine as a divine mission during Orthodox Christmas celebrations with military personnel. He depicted Russian soldiers as fulfilling a sacred duty to defend the homeland, emphasizing a religious aspect to justify the ongoing conflict.

The Russian leader’s statements were made in the presence of high-ranking military officials, including Maj-Gen Aleksei Galkin, commander of military unit 92154, which has been linked to controversial activities in Poland. Putin’s symbolic gestures at the Christmas service suggested his endorsement of covert operations by the GRU, amidst growing concerns of escalating Russian covert activities in Europe.

European security services have highlighted the involvement of a GRU officer associated with unit 92154 in sabotage operations, indicating a broader coordination of clandestine activities by the newly established “Department of Special Tasks” within the GRU. These developments underscore the increasing tensions and risks posed by Russian activities in the region.
