A man has been convicted of an attempted rape incident on an easyJet flight involving a lone female passenger. Nicola Cristiano deliberately changed seats to be near his victim during a flight from Naples to Edinburgh. The 45-year-old was found guilty of attempted rape following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh on December 9.
Cristiano targeted the woman, who was traveling alone, on a flight from Naples to Edinburgh on May 13, 2025, by switching seats to sit next to her. The victim managed to alert the cabin crew after Cristiano moved to a different section of the plane.
Upon landing at Edinburgh Airport, Cristiano was arrested. Police condemned his actions as “despicable” and emphasized the victim’s courage in reporting the incident. Detective Chief Inspector Steph Garnett from Police Scotland’s Public Protection Unit stated that Cristiano would face the consequences and expressed hope that the conviction would provide comfort to the victim.
Garnett encouraged other sexual crime victims to come forward, reassuring them of thorough investigations and specialized support services. Cristiano’s sentencing will take place at a later date.
