Former TV Star John Alford Sentenced to 8.5 Years

Former actor John Alford, known for roles in London’s Burning and Grange Hill, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for sexually abusing two underage girls. The 53-year-old was found guilty by a jury of various sexual offenses, including sexual activity and assault at a party. Recorder Caroline Overton delivered the sentence at St Albans Crown Court.

Alford, showing no emotion, was led away to the cells after tapping his heart while looking at family members. Recorder Overton stated that he would serve a minimum of two-thirds of the sentence before being eligible for release on license. Alford will be required to inform the police of his whereabouts and any name changes for the rest of his life. Moreover, a restraining order prohibits him from contacting the victims directly or indirectly.

The assaults occurred during a sleepover at a friend’s house, where Alford, the sole adult present, took advantage of the underage girls’ vulnerability. Overton highlighted Alford’s lack of remorse and acknowledgment of his actions, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.

The victims, who watched the proceedings remotely, provided impact statements detailing the profound emotional and physical repercussions they have endured. The court heard how Alford exploited the girls’ trust, providing them with alcohol before committing the offenses.

In mitigation, Alford’s barrister mentioned his client’s mental health issues and alcohol dependency. Alford, a father of four, faces challenges in prison due to these issues. Despite his family’s support, they have also faced difficulties following the revelations.

Following the sentencing, Investigator Laura Harrison commended the victims for their bravery and emphasized the severe consequences of Alford’s actions. The Crown Prosecution Service underscored the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for targeting vulnerable individuals.

Alford, also known as John Shannon, was convicted of the crimes committed at a party in April 2022. His past convictions, including drug-related offenses, have contributed to his current legal situation. The sentencing serves as a warning that such crimes against young individuals will not be tolerated by law enforcement.
