“Canada’s Prime Minister Denies Involvement in U.S. Midterm Elections”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected recent allegations suggesting Canada’s involvement in the U.S. midterm elections. Carney dismissed the claims during a press conference in Istanbul, emphasizing that there is no validity to the accusations. The U.S. authorities had raised concerns about potential Canadian interference ahead of the November 3 elections, prompting Carney to address U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra’s remarks.

Expressing disappointment in Hoekstra’s statements, Carney stated, “I’m disappointed that their envoy sees that as his role, to make these suggestions.” The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa released a “fact sheet” attempting to address concerns about Canadian interference, highlighting the government’s dismissal of such allegations.

Carney reiterated the strong diplomatic ties between Canada and the U.S., emphasizing that engagement between the two countries is ongoing, regardless of election timing. He emphasized Canada’s commitment to not interfere with the democratic processes of the U.S. In response to previous warnings by U.S. officials, Carney clarified that Canada’s interactions with American entities are part of routine diplomatic activities.

The release from the embassy listed instances that could be perceived as interference, including meetings between Canadian officials and Democratic representatives. Carney defended these interactions as standard diplomatic practices, emphasizing Canada’s cautious approach to avoid any appearance of interference in the democratic process.

Global Affairs Canada advised embassy and consulate staff to refrain from appearing with U.S. midterm candidates, as reported by Bloomberg and later confirmed by CBC News. Carney clarified that these instructions were issued well before the U.S. Embassy’s statement. When questioned about the possibility of the Trump administration imposing additional tariffs on Canadian exports in response to a poor midterm outcome, Carney expressed doubts about such actions materializing.
