Carrie-Anne Moss to Star in Dark Mystery Series “Yaga”

Carrie-Anne Moss was engrossed in reading a chapter on Baba Yaga from her cherished book when she received an invitation to star in the upcoming series, Yaga. The coincidence felt like a meaningful sign to her.

During an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner, Moss shared that she has possessed Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés since 1999. The chapter she was reading resonated with the project she was offered.

Yaga, a dark mystery-thriller series, is the brainchild of Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, adapted from her 2019 stage play.

The narrative follows private investigator Charlie Rapp, played by Noah Reid (known for Schitt’s Creek), on a quest to find missing heir Henry Park, portrayed by Hudson Williams (from Heated Rivalry). Set in the fictional town of Whittock, the storyline mirrors the Slavic legend of Baba Yaga, a mystical figure dwelling in a hut standing on chicken legs, known for her enigmatic nature.

Sandler approached Moss for the role of Katherine Hargrove, a professor attracted to younger men, by sending her a heartfelt letter outlining her vision. After reviewing the letter, pitch, and scripts, Moss was convinced to take on the character.

Filming in Victoria has brought Moss back to her roots in British Columbia, where she spent summers with relatives during her upbringing.

Growing up in Burnaby and later residing in Granville Island, Moss expressed her lifelong aspiration to become an actress. Influenced by television shows that stirred deep emotions within her, she was drawn to the performing arts from a young age, participating in choirs and creating plays and musicals, which she found immensely rewarding.

Transitioning from Vancouver to Toronto and then Europe, Moss landed her breakthrough role as Tara McDonald, the legal clerk in the television series Dark Justice. Moving to Los Angeles for the show posed challenges due to financial constraints and visa issues, but her unwavering passion for acting kept her going.

Despite facing setbacks and uncertainties, Moss persevered, eventually securing the iconic role of Trinity in The Matrix after rigorous auditions and screen tests. The experience taught her valuable lessons about resilience and trusting the journey, shaping her outlook on rejection and success.

Reflecting on her career-defining role in The Matrix, Moss recalled the emotional impact of witnessing the finished film for the first time, marking a pivotal moment in her acting journey.

Apart from her on-screen accomplishments, Moss prioritized family life, taking breaks to raise her children and cherishing those moments above all else. Relocating to New Hampshire for a quieter lifestyle, she emphasized the importance of finding balance between work and personal fulfillment.

Concerned about the influence of artificial intelligence on creativity, Moss expressed reservations about its impact on storytelling and human expression, emphasizing the spiritual and ethical dimensions of the technological advancements.

As she navigates her future endeavors, Moss remains committed to storytelling as a tool for fostering empathy and understanding, pondering the evolving landscape of creativity in the face of technological advancements.
