Pope Leo Recovers from Lung Cancer Surgery, Ready for Trip

Pope Leo’s medical team from the Vatican announced that following successful lung cancer surgery, he will not require any further treatment. Doctors confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer, which was localized. Lead surgeon Stefano Margaritora and personal physician Luigi Carbone stated that subsequent evaluations revealed no need for additional therapy.

Pope Leo made a public appearance at St. Peter’s Square, engaging with the crowd, waving to pilgrims, and blessing infants from his open-air Popemobile during his first general audience post-surgery on Wednesday. He delivered a sermon in Italian and shortened his greetings in seven languages instead of nine, a minor adjustment from his usual routine.

Despite his recent health concerns, the 71-year-old Pontiff is scheduled to embark on a significant trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. While the trip’s status remains uncertain, his lead surgeon expressed confidence in Pope Leo’s ability to travel, stating that there are no medical impediments to the planned visit.
