Former Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk will be making his return to the Canadian Tire Centre on Wednesday evening for the first time since he requested a trade out of the city. Tkachuk, now a member of the Florida Panthers along with his brother and podcast co-host Matthew, is coming back to a fanbase that is still reeling from the departure of another popular Senators player.
His former teammates are anticipating a highly charged atmosphere. Sens forward Nick Cousins mentioned that the upcoming game is expected to have a playoff-like intensity in October, making it an exciting event for both teams. While there has been little discussion among the players about how Tkachuk will be received, Cousins emphasized that Tkachuk is not a prevalent topic in the dressing room conversations.
Despite Tkachuk’s departure, the Senators, with a record of 6-3-0, are keeping up with the 5-2-2 Panthers. Tkachuk, who spent his first eight NHL seasons with the Senators, sought a move to play alongside his brother and compete on a team considered a strong contender for the Stanley Cup.
Coach Travis Green refrained from speculating on the reception Tkachuk might receive but acknowledged that emotions will likely run high during the game. Tkachuk is expected to speak with Ottawa reporters at the Canadian Tire Centre before the game, marking his first official interaction since the trade.
During a recent episode of his podcast “Wingmen,” Tkachuk expressed anticipation for the game, jokingly suggesting skipping the pre-game meal in Ottawa to avoid any potential sabotage. He highlighted the meaningful relationships he has built with teammates, trainers, and staff in Ottawa, expressing gratitude for the people within the organization.
Tkachuk also announced his intention to donate any Senators jerseys thrown onto the ice by displeased fans to the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, advising against such actions.
