‘Crypto King’ Pleterski Trial Delayed Over Health Concern

Self-proclaimed ‘Crypto King’ Aiden Pleterski’s trial on charges of fraud and money laundering has been postponed until next week following a medical concern.

Originally, the Crown was set to present its final witness on Tuesday, but now, the investor is expected to provide testimony when the trial resumes in Toronto on Monday. Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru informed the jury that the delay was due to a non-serious health issue involving one of the trial participants.

Nakatsuru emphasized the urgency of certain medical treatments needed by the individual and expressed gratitude to the jury for their patience and attentiveness during the proceedings.

Pleterski, acting as his own defense in court, has pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud over $5,000 and money laundering. During the trial, he has questioned the first of 13 witnesses presented by the prosecution, the majority of whom were investors alleging they collectively handed Pleterski over $6 million. These investors recounted providing funds to Pleterski for foreign exchange and cryptocurrency trading, expecting returns ranging from two to 10 percent weekly, as per texts received from him. However, most investors claimed they did not receive any returns.

The prosecution has accused Pleterski of guaranteeing investments made by his clients for trading purposes but allegedly diverting the funds for personal use instead of investing them. Evidence supporting this claim was presented in court last Friday.

A forensic accountant from the Ontario Securities Commission revealed that Pleterski reportedly spent $5.6 million on luxury cars, $4.9 million on credit cards, $870,000 on travel and private jets, and $598,000 on security expenses. Additionally, he transferred nearly $3.7 million to his parents and took $609,000 in cash advances from a credit card, totaling over $16.3 million in personal expenditures.

Moreover, Pleterski purportedly distributed $16.1 million to investors from the funds he received, as per the forensic audit by the accountant.

Following the conclusion of the Crown’s witness testimonies next week, Pleterski will have the opportunity to present his own witnesses and potentially testify in his defense.
