Leonard Foidart, an 84-year-old resident of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Manitoba, has a unique routine before he begins knitting. Due to his inability to sit for extended periods following the loss of his legs in the early 1990s due to multiple sclerosis complications, Foidart lies face down on a specially designed cot, adjusts the lighting, selects his preferred wool, and picks up his knitting needles.
Despite facing health challenges, including a recent battle with bone and prostate cancer, Foidart remains dedicated to knitting. Over the past five years, he has knitted and generously donated more than 1,000 tuques to various charitable organizations, such as Winnipeg’s Siloam Mission and Central Plains Cancer Services in Portage la Prairie, with much of the wool being donated.
Foidart’s passion for knitting was instilled by his late wife, Tharsile, who taught him the craft. He reminisces about their harmonious relationship and shared love for knitting, which motivates him to continue the craft even after her passing. To accommodate his need to lie down while knitting, Foidart constructed a mobile cot with a comfortable body cushion and a headrest, allowing him to create tuques without discomfort.
As a former letter carrier and carpenter, Foidart’s problem-solving skills have been instrumental in overcoming the challenges posed by his physical limitations. He meticulously documents each donation, ensuring that every tuque he knits is accounted for and distributed to those in need.
Recently, Foidart donated 200 tuques to the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation, an organization supporting vulnerable individuals in the community. Co-ordinator Tawnee Kowerchuk expressed gratitude for Foidart’s generosity and dedication to helping those in need, emphasizing the impact of his contributions.
Despite his health struggles, Foidart remains committed to his knitting endeavors, focusing on creating quality tuques without setting specific production goals. His determination and craftsmanship shine through as he continues to knit with precision and passion, aiming to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
