Paris police have imposed an overnight curfew in two areas of the French capital following a weekend of extensive rioting targeting city halls, public buildings, and businesses across France. The curfew, effective from 11 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, aims to safeguard people and property from violence and looting at the Place de la République and Les Halles shopping district. Additionally, gatherings and demonstrations are prohibited from 8 p.m. onwards.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had advocated for localized curfews earlier on Monday. In northern France, curfews for minors under 18 have been enforced in cities like Lille and Nice to curb unrest. Despite the significant violence and property damage, no fatalities were reported during the riots, which authorities lauded as a fortunate outcome.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez tendered his resignation on Sunday, which was rejected by President Emmanuel Macron to maintain law enforcement command. Macron urged Nuñez to ensure transparency regarding planning and intelligence failures that led to the violent incidents. He called for swift implementation of new policing strategies to quell the unrest.
The protests, triggered by rising living costs and school conditions, resulted in extensive damage to businesses in multiple cities, with over 2,400 arrests made. Authorities estimated that around 3,000 businesses suffered damage or looting. Nuñez attributed the violence to troublemakers, looters, and far-left activists, emphasizing the need for adaptable police tactics against mobile groups.
Acknowledging the loss of control in some major cities on Saturday, Nuñez admitted the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining order. The cleanup efforts were underway in Paris, with shattered glass and debris being cleared from the streets. Business owners expressed frustration over the lack of immediate police intervention during the looting incidents.
As the situation unfolds, political figures have weighed in on the government’s response, with far-right parties criticizing the handling of the unrest. Calls for accountability and protection of citizens have emerged amidst concerns over the escalating violence and its impact on public safety.
