“Quebec’s Maple Syrup Reserve Depleted Amid Soaring Demand”

Quebec’s maple syrup producers’ association head has announced that the province’s syrup reserve is now empty due to increased demand for the product. Luc Goulet, the president of Québec Maple Syrup Producers, emphasized the necessity of government assistance to support the industry’s expansion opportunities.

The maple syrup industry heavily relies on weather conditions for its yields, prompting the establishment of a strategic reserve by the producers’ association to maintain stable prices and supply. Last year, U.S. commercial customers stockpiled syrup amid concerns over potential tariffs by former President Donald Trump.

Goulet revealed that the strategic reserve has been depleted as sales continue to soar. He expressed concerns that without the reserve, the industry risks losing customers during unfavorable weather conditions, citing past instances of stock shortages affecting market presence.

Quebec’s maple syrup is gaining global market share, as reported by Louis Turenne, president of the Maple Industry Council. Export figures showed a 9.34% increase in 2024 and a more significant 15.8% surge in 2025 due to tariff threats. However, export growth slowed in 2026 with a 2.48% rise in the first eight months compared to the previous year.

While meeting consumer demand is positive, Goulet believes the industry still has room to expand within Quebec’s maple groves. Expressing dissatisfaction with current funding levels from Quebec City, Goulet hopes for increased support from the newly elected Parti Québécois government.

Turenne suggested that Quebec could boost production by offering financial aid to producers and assisting processors in exploring new international markets. Notably, nearly 65% of maple syrup exports are directed to the United States, indicating progress in diversification compared to two decades ago.

The maple syrup industry’s concentration in Quebec was highlighted, with over 70% of North American production located in the province. The sector significantly contributed to the GDP in 2025, generating $1.21 billion and employing more than 10,000 workers. The industry’s economic impact, excluding sugar shack revenues, underscores its significance as a vital employer and revenue generator in various Quebec municipalities.
