Saskatchewan Native Triumphs on “Jeopardy!”

A man born in Saskatchewan has fulfilled his lifelong aspiration by making an appearance on the renowned TV show “Jeopardy!” Rian Robertson emerged as a returning champion, triumphing in four consecutive games and accumulating a total of $66,101 US over five episodes.

Expressing his sentiments, Rian shared, “I mean obviously as someone who loves the game of ‘Jeopardy!’, I wish I could keep playing indefinitely, but I understand that one has to face defeat at some point.” Originally from Outlook, Sask., a small town situated around 80 kilometers south of Saskatoon with a population of just over 2,300, Rian now resides in Ottawa with his wife and four children.

Despite not residing in his hometown for many years, Rian received immense support from both Ottawa and Outlook. He mentioned, “It was just awesome to see the support that was happening back there because I’m obviously from a little small town. So, when someone kind of gets on a big stage like that, it is cool to see everyone rally behind you.”

From a young age, Rian has been a devoted fan of “Jeopardy!” He used to watch the show with his father, Ian Robertson, as part of their after-school routine. Although health issues prevented Rian’s parents from traveling to Los Angeles where the show is filmed, they celebrated his achievements by hosting a viewing party for around 15 people when his first episode aired.

Rian’s parents, who now live a few kilometers away from Outlook in Broderick, Sask., expressed their joy at the community’s overwhelming support for Rian’s success. Rian’s father recalled how Rian started curating his own collection of intriguing facts at a young age, referring to it as his “book of knowledge.”

Rian’s wife, Kristina Robertson, acknowledged his exceptional knowledge during their first encounter at a trivia night. She witnessed the filming of two of Rian’s “Jeopardy!” episodes and emphasized that being on the show is a significant step toward realizing his ultimate dream of winning the Tournament of Champions.

As Rian continues to pursue his dreams, his achievements have already inspired others, including his mother. Reflecting on his accomplishments, Susan shared, “I am just so thrilled, because I mean to see anyone achieve a lifelong dream is amazing, and in fact, he’s inspired me to get back on the bandwagon because my dream is to be fluently bilingual in French before I die.”
