“Veteran Legion Leader’s Wedding Outburst Sparks Controversy”

A prominent member of a long-standing organization that supports veterans and the community is expressing regret and contemplating his future involvement with the group after a heated incident at a wedding reception in Carbonear, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The wedding reception on October 3 at Legion Branch 23, celebrating the marriage of Justin and Janell Clarke, took a turbulent turn when Berkley Lawrence, formerly a top-ranking figure within the legion in Canada, displayed aggressive behavior towards the bride and other attendees.

Lawrence, who served as the dominion president of the Royal Canadian Legion until August, acknowledged his inappropriate actions during a phone interview with CBC News, admitting to losing control of his emotions and engaging in disrespectful conduct.

The bride, Janell Clarke, expressed feeling frightened and humiliated by Lawrence’s actions, describing them as unprofessional and distressing. She recounted how Lawrence’s outburst overshadowed what was supposed to be a joyous occasion, leaving her emotionally shaken.

Lawrence, a veteran with 33 years of military service and a longstanding member of Branch 23, cited concerns about potential violations of the legion’s alcohol licensing rules as the trigger for his outburst. Witnessing guests with alcoholic beverages outside the venue, he feared repercussions for the legion’s ability to serve alcohol.

During the reception, Lawrence confronted the bride, disrupting the event and causing distress among guests. Despite receiving an apology from Lawrence following the incident, Clarke and other witnesses sought further actions, including Lawrence’s suspension from the legion and compensation for the disrupted reception.

The Legion’s executive committee opted for an apology as sufficient reparation, a decision that Clarke found unsatisfactory, prompting her to share her experience publicly. Branch president Mike Butt supported Lawrence, emphasizing his contributions to the legion while expressing regret over the incident and acknowledging the need for accountability.

Clarke, reflecting on her wedding day tainted by the incident, shared her disappointment and emotional distress resulting from Lawrence’s actions, underscoring the lasting impact of the unfortunate event on her cherished memories.
