“Beloved NDP Figure Irene Mathyssen Passes at 75”

Irene Mathyssen, a prominent NDP figure who represented London, Ontario, at both the provincial and federal levels over a career spanning close to thirty years, has passed away at the age of 75. A spokesperson for Mathyssen’s family confirmed her death on Monday at her residence following a battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones, including her husband, Keith, and daughter Lindsay.

Lindsay Mathyssen, who took over her mother’s role as the MP for London-Fanshawe, described her mother as a source of inspiration in a written statement shared on Tuesday. She expressed, “My mom was more than just a parent to me. She was a mentor, guiding me through life with her strength and determination, inspiring me beyond words.”

Lindsay Mathyssen highlighted her mother’s unwavering dedication to public service and causes she deeply believed in. She emphasized, “She strongly believed in leaving the world in a better state than we found it. This principle forms part of her legacy, which I aim to uphold throughout my life.”

A family friend, Nadine Abi Raad, emphasized Mathyssen’s substantial political impact, noting her exceptional advocacy for human rights, education, healthcare, and veterans. Abi Raad stated, “She touched many lives with her love and respect. Irene’s legacy is special and enduring.”

Abi Raad mentioned that Mathyssen transitioned into politics after a career as an elementary school teacher. Mathyssen served as the MPP for Middlesex from 1990 to 1995 before her defeat by Progressive Conservative Bruce Smith.

In 2006, Mathyssen ventured into federal politics, winning the London-Fanshawe riding. She secured re-election three times before retiring from federal politics in 2019. Her daughter succeeded her, winning the seat in 2019 and 2021 but lost to Conservative Kurt Holman in the 2025 federal election.

Abi Raad emphasized Mathyssen’s strong commitment to social justice, noting her courage in speaking out for marginalized communities. Plans for a commemorative event will be shared in the upcoming days.
